WHEN Swanage resident Sinead Mellor went into labour early in the morning today (Friday), the family swung into action, phoned Poole Maternity Hospital and set off in the snow only to find that the road was blocked at Corfe Castle and they had to turn back.

Mr Mellor didn't hesitate in taking his son, Martin, and daughter-in-law Sinead, to Swanage Hospital for help.  Arriving before the Minor Injury Unit opened, the hospital's cook let the family in and nursing staff stepped in to help.

At around 9.50am, weighing 2.98 kilos (6lb 9oz), baby Kyran was delivered safely in Swanage Hospital's minor injury unit.

Staff at the hospital commented: "This is the first baby to be delivered at Swanage Hospital for around 30 years.  There was a quiet hush of excitement and anticipation in the corridors this morning as everyone went about their business while waiting for the baby to arrive.  Everyone feels thrilled and privileged to have been part of this wonderful occasion."

Proud grandfather Mr Mellor said: "Poole Hospital wanted me to take Sinead back home and wait for an ambulance, but I knew there was a risk they wouldn't get through or would be too late and didn't doubt for one minute that Swanage Hospital would help us.  We're really grateful for their help and support and thrilled about the safe arrival of baby Kyran."
