Employer supported volunteering in the New Forest
COMMUNITY First New Forest - a Council for Voluntary Service supporting the voluntary and community sector across the New Forest District - is supporting its employees by giving them the opportunity to take part in a new employee supported volunteering programme (ESV). This may be in the form of paid time off for individual volunteering, or in a programme developed by the employer, such as a team challenge event or ongoing arrangement with a community partner.
Michael Clowes, chief executive of Community First says: “We believe employee supported volunteering provides real benefits not only to the volunteers and community organisations, but also for Community First New Forest where our employees are more motivated, engaged and can learn new skills that they are able to bring back to the workplace.”
However, it’s not a new idea. Approximately 70 per cent of FTSE 100 companies already have an employer supported volunteering programme. Although in smaller organisations, the percentage is currently much lower; 20 per cent of employees of medium, and 14 per cent of employees of small businesses have an employer supported volunteering scheme.
In many cases employees volunteer in their own time outside of work and ESV is a small part of the time they volunteer. Six out of ten volunteers said volunteering gave them an opportunity to learn new skills, and for many employees the support their employer gives enables them to get involved when they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to.
