Ellingham Show wows visitors
ELLINGHAM Show, held on the Somerley Estate at Ringwood, once again enjoyed good weather and attracted visitors of all ages to a country day out.
With the horticulture marquee, vintage cars and farm machinery to look at, fishing and archery to try plus New Forest vendors, there was plenty of interest around the show ground. Main ring events featured lurchers in action, a sheep dog display and the Wilton hounds while competitions for pets of all shapes and sizes in the dog show proved popular. Children were catered for with a bouncy castle, climbing wall and the mini farm which gave a wonderful chance to handle and get to know smaller animals. Youngsters competed in the fancy dress won by a patriotic Princess Kate and Prince George entry, regally riding on a pony. There were classes and displays galore for riders and spectators with fine specimens of most equine breeds from the dainty Shetlands to the mighty heavy breeds of Suffolk, Shires and Percherons. They provided a dramatic finale with driving trials in which the heavy horses whizzed competition carriages at breakneck speed around the main arena.
Well known as an agricultural event, Ellingham Show lived up to that reputation with judged classes for every sort of sheep, including some extremely rare breeds. The ewes and rams were brushed and combed to perfection and the dairy and beef cattle also received every care and attention. Tiny calves followed their mums into the judging rings while cows and enormous bulls all competed for the rosettes of success. The livestock parade of winning animals, complete with skilled handlers, was a thrilling event for competitors and spectators alike, showing off the worthy champions.
