Dorset Wildlife Trust Joins Badger Vaccination Pioneers

Dorset Wildlife Trust is to help in an effort to prove that vaccinating badgers is more effective than culling them.

The first UK badger vaccination trial results from Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust have indicated that vaccination is affordable and viable. Now, 11 more trusts (of which Dorset is one) are working on their own vaccination programs to support this evidence.

Badgers carry bovine tuberculosis which has been having a serious effect on dairy farmers for years.

The Government's current strategy involves issuing licences that allow the culling of badgers.

Opposition to this approach is strong however with many environmental groups pressuring Defra to invest more money in vaccination development.

Efforts like Dorset Wildlife Trust's own badger vaccination program may prove instrumental in convincing the government to change tack.
