Former Dorset Pc jailed for attack on pregnant ex-girlfriend
A former Dorset police officer has been sentenced to ten years behind bars for assaulting his heavily pregnant ex-partner in Bournemouth town centre.
Matt Cherry, who resigned as a police constable in November 2011, repeatedly struck 26-year-old Caroline Craft in the head and stomach after entering her flat along Norwich Avenue West at around 10am on Thursday March 24 last year.
Cherry was charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent. He was found guilty at Winchester Crown Court yesterday following an eight-day trial.
The court heard that the 35-year-old Poole man had separated from the victim – also a Dorset Police constable – shortly after she became pregnant with his child in autumn 2010. He had hoped that the victim would have an abortion.

On the day of the assault, Cherry tricked his way into Caroline's apartment, by first stating that he was on police business and then pretending to be a cleaner.
Wearing a balaclava, Cherry entered the flat, punched her to the head and body multiple times and subjected her to blows after he knocked her to the floor. The violence was interrupted when an estate agent turned up for a previously arranged appointment.
Fortunately, Caroline was not seriously injured. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy in July 2011.
