Dorchester Town 1-0 Plymouth Argyle: Jake Gosling fires home against Devon rivals

Jake Gosling was Dorchester Town's hero - as the Exeter City loanee eliminated Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle in the first round of the FA Cup.

Yesterday's shock upset at The Avenue Stadium against the League Two outfit put the Dorset side into the second round of the FA Cup. Gosling struck four minutes after half time as Plymouth struggled to create any meaningful chances.

The Pilgrims made life very difficult for themselves as Conor Hourihane was sent off for two bookable offences after eight minutes. The first booking was for a bad challenge, before the 21-year-old was dismissed for stupidly taking a free-kick before the referee's whistle.

Speaking to ESPN after the game, Dorchester boss Phil Simkin said: "I'm really pleased for the boys. I thought we played expectionally well.

"I thought we passed the ball well which was important to me because I didn't want us to embarrass ourselves and I thought we moved the ball around really well."

The Magpies held their own against a side over 40 places above them in the league standings, and made the most of their numerical advantage.

Charlie Clough came closest to opening the scoring in the first half when his powerful header came back off the post. Plymouth's best chance came in the first period when Onismor Bhasera used his strength to create an opening, but his quick drive could only find the side-netting.

The Magpies started the second period on the front foot and soon had a deserved breakthrough. A ball into the penalty area looked to be heading out for a goal-kick. However, captain Mark Jermyn kept the ball in play, finding Gosling with a first-time cut back.

The Exeter City youngster rifled a high drive past Plymouth goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin to send The Avenue Stadium into raptures. 

Plymouth struggled to recover from Hourihane's red card, and failed to create any clear-cut chances to level the contest.

Former AFC Bournemouth player and current Plymouth manager Carl Fletcher said: "To lose a man like that so early in the game, in a tough game, is very disappointing.

"We knew Dorchester were a good side and keep the ball, so we had to make sure we were right defensively.

"We just switched off at the start of the second half and I don't think we really had the quality or the decision-making later on in the half to really get where we wanted to be."

Dorchester have entered the FA Cup every season since 1959 and will face an away trip to either Luton Town or Nuneaton Town in the second round on the weekend of December 1/2.
