A strike from Jamie Gleeson was enough to secure Dorchester Town's place in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The 27-year-old struck just after the break, as The Magpies held strong to dump fellow Blue Square South side Basingstoke Town out of the competition.

The visitors to The Avenue Stadium made the brighter start with Delano Sam-Yorke using his pace and power to good effect. The visitors turned the screw on the Magpies defence early on with a number of corners, but failed to create any meaningful chances.

Stefan Brown was shown a yellow card for a theatrical dive outside the penalty box, but Basingstoke continued to dominate the first period.

Dorchester Boss Phil Simkin made a big double substitution after 26 minutes, bringing on Aaran Pugh and Jamie Symes for Neil Martin and Lewis Morgan, and the Magpies soon found a hold on the game.

Substitute Symes registered Dorchester's first shot on target after 34 minutes, but it was comfortably dealt with by Basingstoke keeper Ashley Bayes. Ben Watson found Jamie Gleeson with a clever ball, but his effort was parried to safety by Bayes as the first half came to a close.

After the break, the Magpies looked more confident and attacked from the outset. A good move down the flank by Watson found Jamie Reid, but he couldn't direct his header on target.

The home side kept up the pressure, and Basingstoke failed to clear their lines as the ball fell to Gleeson in the box. The midfielder hit a low drive out of the reach of Bayes and into the bottom corner of the net.

The game became more open as Basingstoke patiently looked for an equaliser, while Dorchester looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Charlie Clough was solid throughout, as he frustrated the powerful 'Stoke attack.

Jason Matthews was forced into a couple of good saves to keep the Magpies lead intact, but Dorchester were quite comfortable in advancing to the next round of the competition.

The Magpies are now one step away from the FA Cup first round.
