A puppy had a lucky escape today when it plummeted over a cliff in Portland.

Firefighters and coastguards were called at 10.15am to rescue the 10-month-old rough collie, called Jess.

A member of the fire service's Weymouth-based rope rescue team descended the cliff near Southwell Business Park to reach the dog which was then hauled up a 20ft embankment to be reunited with its owner.

The animal not hurt.
