Fat knight on Dorset tour

THERE'S nothing so funny or so gullible as an elderly man who still fancies himself irresistible to all women, and no better play about it than William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor, chosen by Wessex Actors Company for their summer tour.

The Dorset-based company started last summer with a successful tour of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and now takes Sir John Falstaff on tour from next Saturday 30th June through to Sunday 29th July.

Shakespeare wrote the play specially for Queen Elizabeth I, who wanted to see Sir John Falstaff in later life.

Confidence in sunshine

WIMBORNE Musical Theatre will be taking to the stage of the Tivoli Theatre next week for their production of the ever popular Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music.

Set in Salzburg and its surrounding mountains, it's the story of a postulant nun who just can't keep the convent rules, and is sent by a very savvy mother superior to help a widowed naval captain to look after his seven children.

After making them all play clothes from the curtains, Maria rapidly discovers that she's in love with the captain, and runs back to the convent for safety. But life isn't like that. With a background of the rising power of the Nazi's in Austria, this is a story based on truth, and filled with unforgettable songs like Do Re Mi, Climb Every Mountain, Edelweiss, My Favourite Things and of course the title song.

The WMT production is at the Tivoli from Tuesday 26th to Saturday 30th June, directed by Roy Joseph with choreographer Suzi de Villiers and MD John Stringer.

The cast includes Lisa Hopton as Maria, with Pauline Mansfield as the Abbess and Phil Redgrave as Capt von Trapp, with Sally Ager, Julia Wass, Ron Kite, Phil Evans, Vanessa Wassell, Karina McCormack, Hilary Baker, Liam Jefford, Ron Bolton, Jess Hedges, David Elliott, Andy Trant and Lesley Bradshaw.
