SIR Gary Sobers, the legendary West Indian cricketer came to Poole Grammar School to talk to the boys about his experiences in what has been an immensely rich life. His enthusiasm as a now 75-year-old cricket icon was not diminished and his account of what motivates him in life and also what went through his mind as he hit the 6 sixes against Malcolm Nash in 1967 was a story to inspire any young cricketer. His promotion of fair play and sportsmanship was apparent; play the game hard but play it fairly, and if you are out you walk was theme of his talk.

The hundred or so boys who contributed to the question and answer session came away not with just a host of bats and books that Sir Garry had signed but also a sense of being in the presence of a great man who really had influenced the way cricket has been played around the world. For many he also kindled a desire to go to Barbados to play in one of the many youth tournaments that he continues to promote across the cricketing world.

Ian Carter, headmaster said, "We are delighted to have the pleasure of hosting Sir Garry, particularly in this summer of sport. His influence on so many young people is immense and all those present felt privileged to have been in the presence of a great man."
