Chance to sing at Poole's Lighthouse
A glorious opportunity to lift up your heart and sing, Big Sing returns to Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, for the fourth year running on Sunday, 22 September.
Singers of all ages and abilities can come to Lighthouse and join a massed choir in creating a unique performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, one of the greatest choral works of all time.
Singers will spend the day working with Gavin Carr, one of the UK’s top choral directors and the inspirational Choir Master of Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, in a series of workshops as they develop sections of Mendelssohn’s triumphant oratorio building up to an afternoon performance.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to come along and have a go – it’s a no pressure gig, an opportunity for people that have seen Last Choir Standing or The Choir on TV and feel like having a go,” says Gavin. “There are no lengthy rehearsals, it’s just turn up on the day and sing in a secure and non-judgemental environment with a performance run through at the end with a small ensemble of instrumentalists in front of family and friends and anyone else that wants to come along.”

There’s no need to belong to a choir, in fact no experience is necessary at all. Big Sing is simply a fun, inspiring workshop that has already benefited hundreds of local people.
“For people who maybe sing in a rock choir or something based on popular music it’s also a chance to get to know the classical repertoire,” adds Gavin. “And for some of the more confident singers, whether they’ve been before or not, there’s an opportunity to come along and try out for solo roles, which is quite unusual.”
