Brett Pitman: Cherries can express themselves against Wigan Athletic in FA Cup

AFC Bournemouth striker Brett Pitman thinnks Saturday's FA Cup clash against Wigan Athletic will give his side the chance to express themselves.

The Cherries make the 254-mile trip to face the Premier League side on Saturday in the third round of the FA Cup.

Pitman insists the Dorset side will be looking to win, despite going into the tie at The DW Stadium as underdogs.

"The FA Cup is not the main aim of the season as we are unlikely to win it, so it gives us the chance to really express ourselves" said Pitman, speaking to the club's official website.

"For us, it's just the next game and we will be looking to win it.

"They will be big favourites and the pressure is on them whereas it's almost a free game for us and we can go there with the freedom to play.

"The aim is to get through the next round, but we know it will be tough no matter what side Wigan put out."

The Cherries last played Wigan in 2005, when The Latics beat Bournemouth 2-1 in the second round of the League Cup. Pitman featured as a late substitute for Bournemouth.

The last time Bournemouth beat Wigan was in October 2002 when the Dorset side recorded a 2-0 win in League Two.

The teams have only met once in the FA Cup - with Wigan easing to a 3-0 win in 1986.
