Bournemout Hospital needs patients to test new orthopaedic App
THE Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) is inviting current and former patients to test its new App about orthopaedic procedures.
The App, due to be launched in the spring, is an interactive device which covers the whole patient journey, from preparing to come into hospital to what should be done to aid recovery at home. It will be downloadable on iPhones, iPads and Android phones.
Features include patient and consultant videos, a tick list of what items a patient should bring to hospital, and films of post-operative physiotherapy exercises with an option to set a reminder on when to do them. It will also contain generic information about the hospital, including travel details and maps.
The first procedures to feature on the App will be shoulder arthroscopic subacromial decompressions (ASDs) and knee arthroscopies, with others going live soon after.

Lucy Hart, orthopaedic pathway and innovation manager at RBCH, came up with Ortho App, believed to be the first of its kind in the country.
She said: "I'd sat in on pre-assessments with patients and seen the vast amount of information that was given out. Often written information can be easily forgotten so we wanted something that was interactive, with more videos rather than static drawings.
"I really believe the App will improve a patient's access to information in a format where they will be able to easily select the information they want.
"It will also encourage family and friends to get involved with a patient's journey as they could download the App themselves and help their relative or friend prepare to come into hospital and encourage them with their recovery at home."
The trust would like current and former patients to test the App to see how easy it is to use and whether there is anything else that should be added.
A patient testing group will take place on Thursday 14th March. For more information, or if you would like to take part, please email email@example.com or call 01202 726172. You do not have to have your own smartphone to attend.
Information regarding orthopaedic procedures and post-operative physiotherapy will still be available in paper format and online.
