World Book Day was celebrated in style last week at Allenbourn Middle School. For the first time the whole school – pupils and staff – dressed up as book characters. The most popular characters were James Bond, Wally, and the Witch from the Wizard of Oz. Katniss and her sister, from The Hunger Games, were also favourites, and the fashion for animal-patterned onesies gave some people ready-made Jungle Book outfits.

There were prizes for best tutor group, best staff costume, and best student costume, partly funded by the School Council who promoted the event. The book groups also celebrated with a group lunch in the library.

"I enjoyed all the discussions beforehand about what to wear, and seeing so many original ideas. The whole school was buzzing," said Mrs Rosalind Jensen, the librarian.

"It was a fantastic way to express our enthusiasm for reading," said Mr Beattie, head of English.
