Blandford mayor goes blindfolded for national awareness day
NATIONAL Blind Awareness Day was marked in Blandford by members of the Dorset Blind Association branch in the town and Lions Club who invited the town mayor Sara Loch to walk blindfold around the town centre.
She was accompanied by Margaret Hemus, leader of the blind association, and by Lions who were also promoting their international Spectrek, collecting discarded spectacles for the disadvantaged abroad, and handed out their Message in a Bottle packs for people to keep in their homes.

Also represented were Woofability, the charity which trains dogs to befriend the disabled, and the local branch of the Macular Degeneration Society.
After donning her blindfold and feeling her way through the Market Place, up Salisbury Street, over the pedestrian crossing and back down to the Market Place to negotiate the crossings to the former Half Crown Cafe and Greyhound House, Councillor Loch said: "It was quite scary, and certainly raised my awareness of the difficulties faced by the visually impaired."
