Awards for new council offices in Dorchester
WEST Dorset District Council's new office building in Dorchester has won awards for its green credentials and its crime prevention design.
South Walks House has been rated as excellent by BREEAM - the Building Research establishment Environmental Assessment Method - for its environmentally friendly features including high levels of insulation and photovoltaic cells on the roof to generate solar electricity.

The £9.7 million council headquarters has also received the Secured by Design award, the UK Police initiative supporting those who re duce opportunities for crime through design techniques.
District council leader Robert Gould said: "I am delighted that we have achieved both the BREEAM excellent rating and Secured by Design status.

"The new smaller, greener offices will save more than £200,000 a year even after the cost of construction is taken into account. This is due in no small part to the energy saving features incorporated in the building design."
South Walks House was completed in December. It will also include a public library and adult learning centre built for Dorset County Council and due to open in the spring.
