He commented: "It was good to see that the report acknowledged our outstanding GCSE results in 2011 and 2012, as well as celebrating the wide range of opportunities available to students here – from sport and the arts to foreign exchanges.

"It's important to all of our staff that we succeed with every young person in our care.

"We want the wider community to feel proud of its young people and their local academy. This report provides evidence that both of these are being achieved."

Lead inspector Sheila Crew hailed the academy's "rapidly rising standards" and its leadership under Mr Benzie.

She said: "Management of staff performance is robust with targets linked to the quality of teaching and learning, and leading to improvements in classroom practice and students' achievement."

To continue its development, the academy was challenged to ensure marking and feedback was detailed to further raise levels of student progress

The report also wants the academy to raise the quality of its subject leadership, particularly in foreign languages, to "ensure all departments are as good as the best".
