Paul Groves has left his position as AFC Bournemouth manager following last night's defeat against Crawley.

The Cherries have only won once in ten league games this season, and sit just outside of the League One relegation zone on goal difference.

Groves, along with his assistant Shaun Brooks, leave The Goldsands Stadium after coming under pressure in recent weeks from fans. The duo were given permanent positions in May - after taking on a caretaker role following the departure of Lee Bradbury in March.

In an interview with BBC Radio Solent last night Groves insisted: "In football you don't quit. Never quit on the pitch, never quit off the pitch."

Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell has given his support to Groves last week, but has released a statement announcing the departure of the management team.

"I would urge our supporters to recognise the time and effort that Paul and Shaun invested in the first team and their unwavering determination to produce an attractive brand of football" said Mitchell.

"As chairman of AFC Bournemouth, I have personally recognised the direction in which they were trying to take the team in terms of tactics and style of play, and throughout their time in charge they have had my full support.

"However, I believe that luck has not been on their side during their short period at the helm. As we know, football is a results business, but most people will be unaware of the hard work and dedication that they put in behind the scenes to help this club move forward.

"Both Paul Groves and Shaun Brooks have asked me to express their thanks to the support that they have received from the fans. We wish them well in the future, and who knows where that will take them."

An announcement is due to be made about who will take temporary charge of the team.
